About
Anne Ryland’s third poetry collection, Unruled Journal, is published by Valley Press (2021). Her first collection, Autumnologist, was shortlisted for The Forward Prize for Best First Collection 2006, and her second, The Unmothering Class, was a New Writing North Read Regional choice in 2012.
Anne’s poems have been widely published in anthologies, and in magazines including Poetry Review, Magma, Oxford Poetry, The North, Long Poem Magazine, Acumen and Agenda. Her competition prizes include second prize in The Hippocrates Prize for Poetry and Medicine 2016 (Open Category) and first prize in the Kent & Sussex Poetry Competition 2009. She gained a Distinction in Newcastle University’s MA in Writing Poetry and received a Northern Promise Award from New Writing North.
Born and brought up in Essex, Anne spent her student years in Bristol, Bonn and Leeds. She lived in London for thirteen years before moving with her husband to Berwick-upon-Tweed in 1999. A qualified teacher, she runs writing workshops in community settings in Northumberland, Scotland and Newcastle.
