‘Anne Ryland’s poems are subtle as Vermeer paintings – so hauntingly meditative they make you shiver. She has a deliciously mercurial imagination, and is in love with language …’
The Unmothering Class
Arrowhead Press, 2011
‘A powerful sense of history pervades Anne Ryland’s impressive second collection … There is plenty to delight in (staircases, secrets, stars) and be moved by (letters, winters, sorrows).’
Anne Ryland’s poetry reflects a preoccupation with letters, silences and voices from the past. The coastline, landscape and history of Northumberland filter into her writing. Recent poems explore themes such as home, exile and belonging; places that become alternative homes (from ruins to furniture); language and its layers; and the miracles of the human body.
